A way to teach ESL in Japan is on the JET Program. It is such a great way to see Japan and do something cool after getting your B.A. If you want to join the JET Program the summer after you graduate, start looking for application forms in your University's Student Employment Center in September or October. Interviews are around January, and then you take off to Japan with a free plane ticket the following July. Working in the public school system definitely has it perks compared to all the private ESL academies out there. Some people don't recommend JET because they might send you to inaka (the countryside). I was transferred to Abashiri, Hokkaido, a town of 30,000 people, and had the time of my life.

Where can I teach
ESL in Japan?
Japan photos Japan photos Japan photos For Three years I worked on the JET Program as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT). I lived in Abashiri, Hokkaido, Japan. It was probably the easiest paycheck I ever received. The banner on the last photo says "Abashiri Kyouikukyoku Gaikokugo Jyoshu Soubetsukai." (Abashiri Board of Education ALT Good-bye Party).

Here is a guy that is a "Youtei Tskuranai Hito"(Someone who does not make a plan). He also recommends the band, Alfie.

Here is Christine Penner and Chiyo Itoh at a tasty restaurant in Tokyo. I forget the name of it though.

Japan photos Japan photos Japan photos Here is Tsukiji in Tokyo. Tsukiji has a huge fish market where you can see tunas getting sawed up. Pretty cool, and only a little fishy. If you want to see all the action, show up here at around 5:30 in the morning.

Here we are eating sushi at Tsukiji. I think Steve and Chiyo kind of felt it was a little unnecesary for us to treat them.

Here is Steve showing his adoration of Japan.

Here is Christine at Lawson Convenience Store in Tokyo. Lawson has pretty good bentos, so I like it better than 7-11.
